Another element is the small group design project that require seniors to synthesize their knowledge of chemical engineering, correct any deficiencies in their knowledge of chemical engineering, and which also provide faculty a method of assessing the success of the sophomore and junior years. One element is group design projects that require sophomores and juniors to use their knowledge as it is gained. Practical work on process and product design and synthesis is incorporated into all chemical engineering classes.

Students with this background are also prepared for graduate school in engineering and science as well as for any professional school. The Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. These industries convert raw materials, such as ethylene and other organic feedstocks, via chemical and physical changes to produce economically desirable products such as plastics, detergents, paints, and adhesives. Graduates are prepared for positions in operations, development, design, construction, and management of chemical plants, environmental processes, life sciences, and materials processing. The chemical engineering curriculum is designed to give graduates a broad background in chemical engineering processes and to prepare them to become practicing engineers.

Transfer students: Transfer students typically require 5 full terms, or two and a half years at the University of Michigan to complete the chemical engineering program requirements. Students may not take more than 3 ChE core courses outside U-M Ann Arbor. Students may take courses outside U-M to fulfill these requirements but must complete 50 credits at U-M Ann Arbor, including 30 technical credits at the 300-level or higher. The examples lead to graduation in eight terms. Charter and Charge for the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Program Committee RequirementsĬandidates for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Chemical Engineering must complete the program described in the appropriate sample schedule, found under degree requirements. Through ABET accreditation and international accords, U-M chemical engineering degrees are recognized around the US and around the world. To learn more about chemical engineering, see the Careers page. Students who decide to become licensed can begin process during their senior year. With additional opportunities for laboratory research, experience in industry and the ability to combine a Master’s degree with the Bachelor’s degree program, we expect our students to leave with an edge whether they seek employment or additional education.īecause our Chemical Engineering Bachelor of Science in Engineering program is ABET accredited, graduates are eligible for professional engineering licenses. Because of U-M’s strength across its many schools and colleges, students can take advantage of a cross-disciplinary education of unparalleled excellence. Others pursue dual degrees, combining chemical engineering with other engineering disciplines such as Materials Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering or degrees from the College of Literature, Science & Arts, such as Chemistry. Many students choose minors such as the International minor, Interdisciplinary Design, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Engineering. Students with a passion for chemistry and talent in math and problem solving typically do well in chemical engineering.Ĭhemical engineering students at U-M have the opportunity to customize their academic experience through a variety of programs. The program focuses on critical-thinking, preparing our graduates to identify and develop solutions for engineering challenges in the field. They learn to design and conduct experiments and interpret the outcomes. Through our chemical engineering program students develop problem-solving skills and a strong base of engineering, science and mathematics.
